Step by Step:
"Pricking Out" is the process of removing excess seedlings from one area, and re-planting them elsewhere. It is helpful to use where germination has been poor in one area, and so can be in-filled using excess seedlings from another row during the thinning process.
- First, dig out a small furrow where there are gaps in the line (this is where a seed has failed to germinate).
- Next, use a plant label to gently dig below and ease up an excess seedling from another row. This is identical to the process described in Thinning.
- Grasp firmly and pull free. Gently shake to remove any clinging, excess soil.
- Replace the seedling into the pre-prepared furrow, and gently brush material back around it. Consolidate gently with the flat of a hand.
- Repeat until all gaps are filled within the planting row.
